FAQs

Most frequent questions and answers about our mice and rat control services.

This is one of the first questions we ask. If you live in one of these property types, the issue becomes shared as rodents will pass between the different properties.

You may notice any of the following:

  • Droppings, small or large
  • Chew damage like shredded card, paper, wood and/or carpets
  • Chew damage to belongings in loft spaces or cellars
  • A smell of ammonia may indicate rodents harbouring in the area for a long period. This is most common in loft, eave and cellar spaces.

Check for the above in the following areas:

  • Loft and eave spaces
  • Cellars and basements
  • Tunnel holes in loft insulation

If you are in a terraced or semi-detached property or flat, conduct the above checks and ask your neighbours to do the same. This will identify whether there is activity in their home.

It is important to note the source of rodents cannot always be obviously pinpointed, meaning blame cannot be allocated in many cases.

However, this approach allows us to work collectively by identifying access points to help tackle the problem and engage in a more effective pest management programme together.

Unfortunately, we are unable to catch rodents. It is likely they will find their way out of the property through their route in.

Approaching or cornering will scare and delay returning to its pathway.

However, this does indicate rodents are actively entering your property, and as such setting up a pest management programme to deal with them and sure effective mice and rat control is essential.

Documentation will be provided and advice regarding proofing your property against future infestations will be provided.

Although you may only see one or two, rats and mice live in communally in large groups and colonies. This means there will be many more in the area.

They leave scent trails, that act as invisible highways for other colony members, providing pathways through properties and into cavities.

Effective pest management programmes reduce the population, as well as the use of these trails. Trails wear away with nature, resetting the area.

This combined with our expert prevention tips helps to protect the property against future re infestations possibilities.

The answer is yes, but sadly unless you’re a qualified pest controller, you will not have access to rodenticides with effective strength.

Qualified technicians have access to licensed, professional grade rodenticide, which tackles rodent problems more effectively, without the risk of rats or mice becoming ‘bait shy’.

Over-the-count products can cause rodents to become ‘bait shy’. These types of products cause rodents to feel unwell and avoid future bait, including professional single-feed products. This delays pest management programmes, taking longer for rodents to begin feeding on the effective bait, increasing the cost.

Rodents have built up resistance to shop bought products, in a similar way to antibiotics becoming less effective. Decades of improper use has increased resistance to over-the-counter solutions. Whereas qualified pest controllers are licensed to purchase rodenticide with low or no resistance.

South West England rodent colonies have no current resistance to  rodenticides that Devon Pest Solutions  currently use.

It is illegal to release any house or field mice or rats if they have been caught, as rodents carry diseases which threaten human health.

Unfortunately, trapping is rarely effective and will not manage an ever-growing colony. Whilst trapping and relocating may appear to be the kinder option, moving a poorly sighted animal to a new area is not a solution. It will not have any of its familiar scent trails and will have no way of getting back to its burrow, so will likely die in the open.

The rodenticide is secured in toughened locked bait boxes, and attached to bars within the box so preventing bait being taken out or falling out. This is to protect domestic animals but also non-target species like wildlife.

Through our tailored pest management programmes we ensure regular checks. Half and part eaten bait is removed or replaced to ensure bait does not leave to bait box.

Local councils may direct you to the BPCA website to recommend a qualified pest controller.

Some councils may offer limited services such as identifying problems or monitoring. This may be free or chargeable.

Local councils may not be able to provide a full pest management service that will guarantee your infestation will be resolved. The extent of services and cost associated will depend on your local authority.

A professional and specialist pest control company is more likely to offer swift and effective results using full management programmes.
